FAQ's The Pilates Coach Studio

What makes The Pilates Coach different from other studios in the area?

The Pilates Coach is the area's most established, fully equipped studio. We feature a complete line of Pilates apparatus, including Reformers, towers and chairs. We're the first in the area to offer the innovative Gravity™ incline resistance system.

Two international master trainers - Leslee Bender (founder of the Bender Ball™, the original mini stability ball) and Dr. Rob Johnson D.C., lead our staff. The studio also serves as an international training site for certifications in Pilates and other fitness and kinesiology specialties.

Your first Pilates or Gravity session is free and conducted on a one-on-one basis. The session includes a postural/fitness assessment. In addition to showing you how to do all the movements correctly, we'll incorporate modifications or variations to ensure you're able to perform the exercises safely and get the maximum benefit from them.

What is Gravity™?

Gravity is an innovative 30-minute total body strength and endurance workout. It's performed on a single, easy-to-use machine - the GTS™. There are no weights to adjust. Instead, a person's own body weight is used as resistance. The Pilates Coach is the first in this area to offer this unique, highly effective training system.

What can I expect from taking Pilates or Gravity™ class?

Pilates will tone your muscles and give you greater core strength and flexibility. It's not meant to be a weight loss program but will help you looked more toned. Pilates can also help you perform all activities much better, from sports to everyday tasks. You should see results in approximately 10 sessions, especially if you also incorporate some form of cardio training into your fitness routine.

Gravity™ resistance training helps develop strength and endurance. It also offers cardio benefits. It's the perfect complement for Pilates training, and makes a great overall fitness routine.

What advantages does The Pilates Coach offer over a gym or health club?

We limit class sizes to six students. That means you get lots of personal attention to help ensure you're performing the movements correctly. It's like having a personal coach to guide you through your workout. Private and semi-private sessions are also available.

In addition, your first Pilates or Gravity session is free. It includes a complementary health assessment and review of your personal goals. In addition, we offer convenient online scheduling.

The Pilates Coach also includes a retail area where you can purchase fitness apparel and accessories, DVDs and the Bender Ball™, the original mini stability ball created by The Pilates Coach's founder, Leslee Bender.

Can men do Pilates and Gravity?

Yes. Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates to help him overcome his own physical limitations. He eventually became a bodybuilder, boxer and gymnast. He later used his method of exercise as a means to rehabilitate injured soldiers. Today many men, including professional athletes and sports enthusiasts, find that Pilates makes a great core training program. It increases core strength and flexibility, helping to improve performance in all sports and activities. Pilates is especially popular among golfers and other sports enthusiasts at risk for back problems.

Can I do Pilates or Gravity if I have back or knee problems?

Yes. During your first session, we'll do a full postural assessment to identify any issues you may have that could affect your participation in Pilates or Gravity. We'll then show you modifications to the various exercises that will allow you to perform them safely.

Do I need to have a dance background to do Pilates?

No. While professional dancers have long been attracted to the benefits offered by Pilates, the program can benefit anyone regardless of fitness level, age or background. Our staff has analyzed all Pilates movements from a biomechanical perspective. We've incorporated modifications and/or props to make them safer and more effective for the general population.

What do I wear?

You should wear loose, comfortable clothing. Typical fitness attire is appropriate.

Will I sweat?

Whether or not you sweat will depend on your body chemistry and fitness level. Pilates is not a rigorous workout like running or aerobics. However, you may find that Gravity™ sessions are a bit more taxing than Pilates sessions. You may be more inclined to work up a sweat.

Do I need to bring anything?

No. We provide the equipment and any props you may need.

Where is The Pilates Coach located?

Our studio is conveniently located in a quaint part of Reno at 460 California Avenue. We're on the second floor. On-site parking is available.
